Battle of the Books FAQs

What is Battle of the Books?

Battle of the books is a trivia competition between all MNPS middle schools. Students read 20 books (the book list is below) and answer trivia questions about the books. Each team can bring 5 team members. If more than 5 students from Litton want to participate we will have a competition with students at Litton to pick our top 5 team members to represent us in the district competition.

When is Battle of the Books?

The competition is scheduled to be held virtually on May 13th, 2021.

Who can participate?

The competition is open to any Litton student, 5th - 8th grade.

How do I participate?

Let me know you're interested (send me an email at kathryn.garrett@mnps.org or a message on Schoology) and get started reading the books on the list. If you'd like to check them out from our library let me know 1-3 titles you'd like to start with and we can work out getting the books to you.

As you read keep in mind that the questions are often specific details in the book. All questions start with In Which Book (IWB for short) and the answers are always the title of the book.

Ex. Question: IWB was a child thrown from a moving car? Answer: Born a Crime

I strongly encourage you to write sample questions as you read. We will use those for practice leading up to the competition.

How many books to I have to read?

Our goal is for each student to read all 20 books. We will set benchmarks throughout the year to help stay on track. The first deadline is to read 5 books by beginning of winter break. One perk of being in Battle of the Books is that the checkout limit of 2 books at a time doesn't apply to you, as long as you're checking in with me and being responsible.

Can I only read Battle of the Books books this year?

Absolutely not. I encourage all reading. It's up to you if you'd like to read additional books outside of the Battle of the Books list. You know yourself and what feels manageable to you.

What happens if I change my mind about participating?

If you decide BOB isn't for you, just let me know. No hard feelings, I'm just happy you're reading.
